Conditie van de baby tijdens de baring (doptone & CTG)

Tijdens de baring wordt naar het hartje van de baby geluisterd. In de eerstelijn gebruikt de verloskundige daar meestal een doptone voor (soms een toeter of fetoscoop indien gewenst door ouders). In de tweedelijn wordt het CTG vaak aangesloten. Hierbij worden de harttonen van de baby door middel van een uitwendige transducer gemonitord (of met een schedelelektrode via het hoofdje van de baby) in combinatie met een toco die de weeën registreert. Wanneer er twijfel is over de conditie van de baby, wordt dit CTG soms aangevuld met een bloedonderzoek naar de pH-waarde van de baby (via het hoofdje). Regelmatig wordt er in de tweedelijnszorg ná de geboorte van de baby nog bloed afgenomen uit de navelstreng om pH-waardes te bepalen.

Waarom luisteren we naar de harttonen van de baby? Wat zijn normale harttonen en wanneer moeten we ons zorgen maken? Wat zijn de voor- en nadelen van het CTG? Waarom is er soms ophef over de schedelelektrode? En wat zegt die pH-waarde nu precies? Deze en meer vragen beantwoorden we in dit artikel.
